The Kemerai are orphans, half-breeds born from humans and an ancient race called the Kairnalla, of which only their name survives. Graceful and insightful, gifted with natural power over arcane energy, the Kemerai’s innate sense of superiority often lands them in trouble with the other inhabitants of their world.
While Kemerai and humans often work closely together, the Kemerai have a distrust for humanity that is hard to overcome. Judging by the gifts the Kemerai inherit from their Kairnalla ancestry, it seems likely that the Kairnalla were a brilliant and powerful people, blessed with considerable arcane power. How is it then that the Kairnalla have vanished and the comparatively weak humans have become such a dominant force in Kenafiir? This tension is made much worse by the issue of further breeding between Kemerai and Humans. As the only two races that can have children together, romance is not unknown between them, but Kemerai communities generally take tremendous insult by this and take whatever actions they see as necessary to prevent a child from being produced. With the Kairnalla dead or vanished, the arcane blood in the Kemerai is all that is left of them. Each time a Kemerai child is born with human blood, the bloodline becomes weaker. The Kemerai realize that unless extremely strict measures are enforced, their kind will eventually die out and all that is left of the Kairnalla will be gone. Kemerai who do have a child with a human are seen as pariahs.
Physically, the Kemerai are very similar to humans. They tend to have sharper features, more lithe bodies, and their ears tend to be slightly longer, ending in sharp points. Additionally, their eyes are generally pale and radiate a faint light, the degree to which depends on how actively they incorporate the Arcane arts into their life.
While some Kemerai become obsessed with the power of magic and seek to enslave or otherwise belittle the Kormin, most see them as kindred spirits, searching for their own destiny in a hostile and lonely world. It is a point of sadness that the Kormin are largely distrustful of the Kemerai.
Kemerai have an innate affinity with arcane energies, but they are far less naturally skilled when dealing with the natural world. Still, many are drawn to wild places, away from the human cities and the sense of isolation they bring. As such, they greatly admire the Quixix, who share a similar form to man, but are wholly of the natural world. Kemerai searching for self-understanding will often travel into the wilds, searching for Quixix to teach them about the world and possibly about themselves.
