Much of his past has been kept secret by Nunegar’s mage guild, but what is known is that he was a student there, he had a politically untenable romance with the Princess of Nunegar, and that he managed to get access to secret texts on the art of Necromancy, with which he showed a surprising affinity. Nunegar’s royal family had him banished.
He remained gone and forgotten for several years before returning as the self proclaimed Lord of the Dead. Some say that he willingly gave up his place among the living to earn the loyalty of the dead. Whatever the truth his, his mastery of necromancy is unparalleled. Before Irio, necromancy was a shunned art, practiced only by a few hidden schools. The practitioners fumbled with incantations and rituals, striving the reanimate corpses to perform simple tasks. Irio fund each school, one after another, and demanded their loyalty. Then he bided his time until Rhamas’ invasion of the Empire gave him the opening he needed to conquer Nunegar and capture the princess.
